Gradings

Progression in Kyokushin Karate is via Gradings. These are taken at the dojo (training hall / gym) up to and including 1st Kyu (second Brown Belt). For 1st Dan (black belt) you can be graded at Crawley dojo and thereafter at the annual summer camp by Hanshi Steve Arneil 9th Dan (President of the IFK).

The grade of a Kyokushin karateka is measured in Kyu (upto Black Belt), and Dan for the different grades of Black belt. The colour belt worn by the karateka represents their grading level:

 Beginner
 10th and 9th Kyu
 8th and 7th Kyu
 6th and 5th Kyu
 4th and 3rd Kyu
 2nd and 1st Kyu
 1st Dan (Shodan) and above

Competitions

There are four types of competition open to Kyokushin Karateka.

Nihon Shobu

A non-contact point scoring fighting competition. Once a fighter has scored against their opponent the bout is stopped and a point (or half point) is awarded. The bout then re-starts and continues in this way and ends when two points have been scored by a competitor, or two minutes are up, which ever is sooner. The person with two points, or the most points after 2 minutes is the winner.

Clicker

Again a non-contact point scoring fighting competition, two minute bouts are fought, however points are earned over a continuous two minute period ie the bout is not stopped when points are awarded. At the end of the bout the competitor with the most points is declared the winner.

Knockdown

A full contact fighting competition. two minute rounds are fought, a fighter may win by several methods; by knocking out their opponent, for points earned by causing an opponent to stop fighting (eg a punch downs an opponent for less than five seconds), or by judges' decision at the end of the round. If a draw arises a further two minute bout must be fought. Further draws entail a fighter's weight or board breaking skills to be used to determine the winner.

The categories available in the men's competition are:

The categories available in the women's competition are:

Note - a BKK fighter must compete in three novice competitions before fighting in an Open or Regional tournament.

Kata

A non fighting competition. The competitors are judged on their ability to perform Kata - set forms of techniques and movements.

There are six dates a year in our competition calendar. These are listed below and more information about them can be found in the newletters or on the BKK website.
